Dreyer, Executive Director, 732.451.0064 SPOTLIGHT ON SCARPELLI: GARDEN STATE PHILHARMONIC HONORS BRICK MAYOR Brick/Point Pleasant/Toms River, Ocean County, NJ - The Garden State Philharmonic will honor Mayor Joseph Scarpelli of Brick Township with the Gloria & Morris Adler Distinguished Service Award at their Annual Brunch event Spotlight on Scarpelli on Sunday, September 12, 2004 from 11 am to 2 pm at the Crystal Point Yacht Club in Point Pleasant. Mayor Scarpelli receives this award for his role in creating a thriving musical life for the Jersey Shore. The Annual Honoree Brunch will feature Music from the Italian Cinema as performed by Diana DiMarzio and GSP Maestro Anthony. The event is supported in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Department of State, and the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders. A brief organizational Annual Meeting will follow the event. Admission to Spotlight on Scarpelli is $55 per person includes brunch. Tables of 10 are available for $500. Under his direction, the Township has instituted the Summerfest concert series, various arts/cultural programs featuring musical performances, theatre, art exhibitions and created a Township Cultural Center on Herbertsville Road. Mayor Joseph C. Scarpelli Joseph C. Scarpelli was born and raised in New York City and graduated from Fordham University in the Bronx. His ties to the Jersey Shore began at birth since his parents owned a summer home in Long Branch. This is where he eventually met his wife of thirty-nine years, Dorothy Montulet. Moving to Brick Township in 1964, he raised his four children, Dr. Craig Scarpelli, Dr. Glenn Scarpelli, Kim Scarpelli-Bogan, and his youngest son Kyle Scarpelli. Mayor Scarpelli began his involvement in the community by joining the Brick Jaycee's in 1966 and working his way up through the chairs to become local President in 1968. His involvement with the Jaycees prompted him to run for the Brick Township Board of Education and he was elected in 1970 and served until 1977. He was elected President of the Board of Education in 1973 & 1974. He served as a Councilman from 1977 until 1989. During this period he still found the time to be involved with the Brick Soccer Association as a coach and founding member, Saint Dominic's Basketball coach, Boy Scout Troop 46 volunteer, Chairman of the Clean Community Litter Task Force, Chairman Fall and Spring Township wide clean up campaigns, founding member of the Brick Township Citizens Against Illegal Dumping, Trustee with Friends of the Library, Trustee of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, member of the Epiphany Council Knights of Columbus, member of the Salvation Army and the Brick Township Planning Board. In 1989 he was honored by the Ocean County Boy Scouts of America as the recipient of their "Good Scout" Award for service to the community. On January 1, 1994 Joseph C. Scarpelli was sworn in as the Mayor of Brick Township. Since becoming Mayor he has been honored by the Strand Theatre as their first "Star of the Year", the Brick PopWarner Dragons, Ocean Inc.'s, Head Start Program, Dover Township Junior Women's Club, and the Herbertsville First Aid Squad. In 1998 he was inducted into the New Jersey League of Municipalities Elected Officials "Hall of Fame" and received the St. Thomas Good Neighbor Award. Mayor Scarpelli has served as a member of the Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission and Summerfest, the Mayor's weekly summer concert series, has become the largest free family concert series at the Jersey Shore. Completely funded by sponsor donations the concert attracts people from across the state. It has brought Brick Township together as a community and attracts over 100,000 people annually.
